Over the past five years, Katie has been on a remarkable journey—teaching her daughter to read, writing (and now editing) a novel, and leading middle and high school students through hands-on, inquiry-based projects, including the unforgettable task of mummifying chickens. Through it all, she has remained committed to nurturing critical and creative thinking in young minds.
The pandemic marked a turning point in her perspective on education. What began as a temporary homeschooling solution soon revealed a deeper truth: education is most powerful when it reflects a family’s unique values, needs, and aspirations.
With more than 15 years of experience in higher education and the nonprofit sector, Katie has worked as a researcher, informationist, and program manager with organizations such as Johns Hopkins University, the American Foundation for the Blind, and the American Anthropological Association. She holds a PhD in Anthropology and a Master of Library and Information Science, combining academic rigor with a passion for creative innovation.
As the Founder of Quill and Quest, Katie helps families and organizations navigate the full spectrum of educational options—from public school to homeschooling, hybrid models, and everything in between. Her mission is to bridge divides and foster inclusive conversations, working with secular and religious communities, and across the political spectrum. For Katie, educational choice isn’t a partisan issue—it’s a deeply human one.
